About Us

1. Who we are

Kailua Dentistry is a phone line for people on the Windward side who need a dentist and don’t want to spend an afternoon working through listings to find an office that’s taking new patients. You tell us what’s going on, whether it’s a checkup that’s overdue, a filling that fell out, or a child’s first visit, and we connect you with an independent dental office that serves Kailua. Our owner started this service as a speedy way to match locals in need with dental services.

Our job is the step before the appointment: matching what you need, your insurance, and your schedule to an office that can see you.

2. Knowing this town

Dental care on Oahu starts from a different place than most of the mainland. Hawaii has the lowest rate of community water fluoridation in the country, about 8.5 percent of residents on public water systems, and much of what fluoridated water exists here has historically been on military bases. Kailua’s tap water comes from the Board of Water Supply and isn’t fluoridated, which puts more weight on fluoride toothpaste, varnish, and regular checkups.

It shows in the numbers. A statewide Department of Health survey found that 71 percent of Hawaii third graders had experienced tooth decay, against a national average of 52 percent, the highest rate in the nation. On Oahu, the figure was 68 percent. More than 60 percent of children in the survey had no protective sealants on their molars. Those figures are from the 2014–15 school year, the most recent full statewide survey we could find. For families in Kailua, it’s a good reason to ask about sealants and fluoride at a child’s first visit.

3. Coverage and cost

Insurance is usually the first question callers have, and Hawaii has its own setup. Adults on Med-QUEST, the state’s Medicaid program, lost routine dental coverage in the 2009 budget cuts and had emergency-only coverage for over a decade. Preventive and restorative coverage, including cleanings, x-rays, and fillings, came back on January 1, 2023. If you went years without a covered checkup, you may be eligible now. Hawaii Dental Service (HDS) currently processes Med-QUEST dental claims.

If you buy your own coverage, note that no medical plan on Hawaii’s exchange includes dental, so dental is a separate plan; 2026 stand-alone premiums run about $18 to $46 a month. When you call, tell us your insurer or Med-QUEST plan so we can point you toward an office that takes it. The office will confirm coverage and costs directly.

4. How referrals and licensing work

Every office we connect you with is an independent practice. You book with them, they evaluate you, and they decide on treatment with you. Dentists in Hawaii are licensed by the state Board of Dental Examiners, and you can check any dentist’s license through the state’s professional license lookup.

If you have facial swelling that’s spreading, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a high fever with tooth pain, don’t wait for a callback. Go to an emergency room or call 911. For a knocked-out tooth, call a dental office right away; time matters.

5. How we work

  • One call, one description. We note what’s bothering you, how long it’s been going on, and whether it’s routine or urgent, so you don’t repeat yourself.
  • We ask about insurance up front, including Med-QUEST, HDS, and other plans, so you’re connected with an office that can accept it.
  • We ask who the visit is for. Kids, adults, and families may be best served by different offices.
  • No diagnosis, no pressure. We don’t tell you what treatment you need; the dentist does, after an exam. You decide whether to book.
  • We only collect what’s needed to connect you.

6. Our service area

  • Kailua Town: the central area, where most offices are within a short drive, which makes regular six-month cleanings easier to keep up.
  • Enchanted Lake: a 1960s neighborhood of family homes, where parents often want one office for both kids’ checkups and their own care.
  • Keolu Hills: residential streets above Enchanted Lake, close to the same offices as central Kailua.
  • Maunawili: set back toward the mountains along Kailua Road, where grouping family appointments on one trip is often worth asking about.
  • Lanikai: a small beach neighborhood with one road in and out, so appointment timing around traffic matters.
